Examination under Anaesthetic (EUA)

Sometimes, some conditions mean that you cannot be examined properly in the outpatient clinic due to local discomfort or pain. It may be suggested to you by your surgeon that an EUA is performed. This is usually done as a day case procedure under general anaesthetic. It may often be the first part of an operation and depending on the findings, the surgeon may proceed to other treatments during the same operation. In this case, the surgeon will always talk to you beforehand about what may be found at the EUA and only with your consent will they proceed to treat any conditions they find as necessary.

As part of an EUA it is usual practice for the surgeon to perform a rigid sigmoidoscopy and proctoscopy.
